Sluts Of Seattle, Unite!

Seattle is weird to a newcomer like me... First they encourage you to ride the S.L.U.T. and the next thing you know there is a special slut parade coming to town to prevent you from doing that thang. Or wait, are they talking about something else? 


Let me break it down for you: the SlutWalk is coming to town! During this SlutWalk, sluts from all over town will gather to walk the Seattle streets dressed like, eh... sluts, in order to bring attention to women who are blamed for being sexually assaulted because of how they dress or act. 


The SlutWalk was born in Toronto last January after a police officer told a group of university students that "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized." The cop later apologized for the remark and was disciplined, but the movement had already begun. Soon, SlutWalks took place in Toronto, Austin, Texas, and Boston, where chants of "No more hate, no more violence. We are sluts. We won't be silenced," were heard in slut crowds marching for the good cause.


Now, if you look like a slut and act like a slut you will be treated like a slut, is what my momma taught me. But I suppose in 2011 it doesn't have to be that way. And the SlutWalk does kind of sounds like a good excuse to get dressed up. Because lord knows there's not much else that is going to get my lovely local women out of their rubber boots, plaid shirts and jeans. 


So as I feel A) rather loyal to my inner slut and her love for skimpy dresses, B) somewhat obliged to slut around for the cause, and C) always in the mood to meet some fellow sluts, I think I am going to have some fun with this. The exact route of the Seattle "SlutWalk" has not been posted, but so far nearly 3,000 people have RSVP'd via the event's Facebook page. The walk is planned for June 19 from Noon to 3 PM. Holler if you want to join me for some good old fashioned sluttery and subsequent happy hour:)
